Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB)
Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen.
I was sitting at my computer, doing a maths assignment, when I took a brief break to take a look at the recent posts on our wonderful thread. while browsing, I managed to think about Same Type Attack Bonuses (STAB), and it set me off on a thinking tangent.
For those of you who don't know, STAB is the bonus that a Pokemon gets from using attacks that share a type with it. For my example of STAB, I would like to Introduce you to my very first Pokemon...
Here is my Charizard, whose nickname is FIRE, and I first got him as a Charmander when I put my very first copy of Red version into my old-school brick Gameboy.
Since he does not fit into the newer generations too well, We will imagine that FIRE's stats are just the Base Stats for a Charizard. These Being:
Hp: 78
Attack: 84
Defense: 78
Special: 85
Special Attack: 109
Special Defense: 85
Speed: 100
Also, for the benefits of this example, here is his moveset:
Fire Blast
Blast Burn
Fly
Strength
How STAB Works, is that when a Pokemon uses a move that has the same type as the Pokemon's type, then that attack will get an additional 50% power bonus.
this means that an attack's damage becomes 1.5x what it would normally be.
EXAMPLE ONE - WITHOUT STAB:
Using FIRE's Stength:
Strength
Type: Normal
Attack: Physical
Power: 80
Accuracy: 100%
HP: 15 (Maximum of 24)
Because FIRE is not a Normal-Type Pokemon, is does not obtain the STAB effect when using Strength, causing its damage to stay at 80.
EXAMPLE TWO - WITH STAB:
Using FIRE's Blast Burn:
Blast Burn
Type:Fire
Attack: Special
Power: 150
Accuracy: 90%
HP: 5 (Maximum of 8 )
Blast Burn is supposed to deal 150 damage to the defending Pokemon, however due to the STAB effect, this damage is inreased as follows:
150 x 1.5 = 225 Damage
As you can see, using STAB to your advantage can be critical to maximising your Pokemon's potential.
Every week (as I sit here doing maths assignments) I will be putting up a new "tutorial" on Advanced Pokemon Techniques. Next Week will be Strengths, Weaknesses, Immunities and Critical Hits.
Until then, "A world of adventures with Pokemon awaits! Let's go!"

Re: Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB)
Yes most people do not know what stab means so this should be helpful... But there are some stab attacks most people do not see such as Physic on Starmie or even Iron Tail on Lucario... These attacks don't really matter too much, but you should have at least 1 or 2 stab attacks if the pokemon has duel elements...

Re: Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB)
it is true that a lot of people know about STAB, but not everyone. Also, some people might not know fully how it works, that is the purpose of the tutorials... They are here to help the people who might not know the more advanced mechanics.
